Christin’s Story: Pregnancy with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)

by Monarch Women's Wellness on December 5, 2012

“My husband is in the Navy, and when we first moved here a few years ago, I adamantly wanted to find not just a “good” OB/GYN doctor, but a “great” one. I have PCOS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which I have battled since I was a teenager. I wanted a doctor who had a special interest in this syndrome and who could really relate to my personal health situation. When I found Dr. Thibodeau’s online profile on Monarch’s website, I knew she was the doctor for me. I lived in Virginia Beach, but was willing to make the drive to Western Branch to meet her and see if this would be a good “fit.”

I knew having PCOS could affect my ability to conceive and carry a child to full term. Even though I knew this information, I was always too scared to ask the hard questions, because part of me didn’t want to know the answers. Would I be able to have children? I wasn’t sure. Needless to say, I was very anxious for our first meeting. I went into my first appointment with a “laundry list” of questions. Now was the time for me to ask, because my husband and I wanted to start a family.

From that first appointment, I immediately had a strong connection with Dr. Thibodeau. She was extremely knowledgeable about PCOS and thoroughly answered all of my questions. She actually answered some of them before I could even ask! I was comfortable with her from the start. Even though she is a brilliant surgeon, she would sit down and talk with me like a friend. I had never experienced this from a doctor before. It was incredibly refreshing! Especially since this woman would be delivering my first child!

After I became pregnant, I started to feel the whole “Monarch Experience.” From the ladies at the front desk to the nurses checking my vitals, everyone was always so welcoming, kind and knowledgeable. I felt completely comfortable during all of my many pregnancy visits to Monarch.

During my eighth month of pregnancy, my husband’s duty station was changed from Norfolk to King George County in Northern Virginia. By that time, I had truly fallen in love with Monarch and Dr. Thibodeau. I couldn’t imagine any other doctor or practice delivering my sweet baby girl. So I did what any rational expectant mother would do! I stayed behind during my last month of pregnancy and slept on a twin mattress, with just a few items of clothes and my TV! My husband would come home on weekends and sleep on an air mattress beside me.

My due date came, and I delivered our precious baby girl, Gwendolyn, on September 1, 2011.  When the cord had gotten wrapped around Gwendolyn’s neck, I can still hear my mother saying, “There is NO ONE else I would want taking care of you, except Dr. Thibodeau.” I give Monarch Women’s Wellness my highest recommendation! I am actually still driving 3 hours to Chesapeake for my annual appointments with Dr. Thibodeau.

Christin’s Advice:

My advice to anyone who is battling PCOS or searching for an OB/GYN is to find someone you can sit down and have a conversation with–someone you can trust in making important decisions for your health, but who you can also laugh with. Most importantly, look for a doctor who makes you feel comfortable asking questions, lots of them! Doctors like that still do exist, and they exist at Monarch Women’s Wellness.”
