Crazy Bangs!

I stopped at my daughter’s preschool yesterday to pin her bangs back. We are doing the Great Bang Grow Out, which requires more energy and equipment than I had realized.

My husband was dropping her off. They had been together all morning – special Daddy time – but I didn’t expect him to notice if her hair was in her face, or know what to do about it.  And so I swung by. I grabbed the bobby pins. I fixed the hair. I kissed her goodbye.Hair Pins

Why couldn’t I let it go? Why did I keep wiping my own hair out of my own face as I thought of her possible predicament?

It’s as if we once shared the same body…

Behold, the neuroses born from watching someone live and grow outside in this world, who I once felt
grow inside of me.

She has her own room now, and her own opinions. She, who used to get nourishment from my food choices, now declares she wants Goldfish for breakfast. She, who I used to visit during those wonder-filled ultrasound appointments, now tells me about her day, with lots of adjectives.

And she asks to go outside by herself and stay in the car while I shop…I say, “No. You are four.” And she cries, longing for independence and separation… not realizing how far she’s come or that I dread how much farther she must go.

But I best find some coping skills because I cannot be pinning those slow-growing bangs in college!

We want to hear from YOU!  Share one of your favorite “independent” moments..  We will randomly select a winner from all entries on Wed, February 1st!  Post your stories below and join us on Facebook. My favorite was the day when my 2 1/2 year old son wandered in to the kitchen as I was working on dinner on night, announced, “I’m peepee!” to which I stopped and immediately tried to whisk him off to his room to the potty. When we got there, it was full. I asked, “Do you have to peepee?” and he replied, “I just did, Momma!”, pointing to the full potty. When did he learn to do that?!?!
