Haley’s Story: How a Second Opinion Changed her Life…

by Monarch Women's Wellness on June 3, 2014

The past 5 years of my life have been hard and painful. I dreaded my period every month. The pain and heavy bleeding were too much to bear. There were many days of my period that I couldn’t even leave the house. I am a school teacher and have children of my own to take care of, so missing work and being bedridden in pain really isn’t an option for me.

On numerous occasions I asked my former OBGYN for help. I couldn’t keep living like this every month. They performed an ultrasound, supposedly couldn’t find any “problems”, and continued to tell me that what I was experiencing could be normal for some women.  I am also an insulin dependent,  Type 1 diabetic; so I was getting the feeling that that practice honestly didn’t know how to help me.

Meanwhile, my mother-in-law had been seeing the providers at Monarch Women’s Wellness with wonderful results. She suggested that I schedule an appointment for a second opinion. I immediately went on Monarch’s website and started researching. I was hopeful when I read the patient reviews and stories, and all the credentials and awards the practice has earned. These doctors seemed well-loved and very skilled and professional. I called the next day and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Rebecca Thibodeau Khan.

When I met Dr. Thibodeau Khan, I was very impressed with her kindness, mixed with her extremely knowledgeable and medically wise personality. My list of  questions and concerns about my situation, especially because of my diabetes, was LONG! During our first meeting, she was very thorough, and made certain that she had covered everything with my medical history. After spending a long time talking with me, she diagnosed me with Adenomyosis, a condition in which the uterine lining becomes implanted outside the uterus and causes severe pain and heavy bleeding during your period.  The cure for this, she explained, was to have a hysterectomy. She explained that at Monarch Women’s Wellness, they preform minimally invasive surgeries; and that my hysterectomy would be laparoscopic. Even with my Type 1 Diabetes she felt comfortable and confident in performing the surgery successfully. She suggested I take time to think about it and discuss it with my husband, which I truly appreciated. These were huge words for me to hear….. hysterectomy….. I needed to process this!

My husband and I both attended my next appointment with Dr. Thibodeau Khan. She was wonderful at not rushing us and answering each and every question thoroughly and completely. My husband was beyond impressed and was very comfortable in trusting her with my health. Dr. Thibodeau Khan also explained to me that she knew what it felt like to wear an insulin pump. She told us how during one of her pregnancies she had gestational diabetes and had to wear an insulin pump. Wow! I was floored! A physician that could actually relate to what it felt like was something I had never experienced! After this appointment, I knew it was time to schedule the surgery and that I could 100%, without a doubt, trust her. What a relief!

The day of my surgery finally came, and to be honest, I was nervous. I am grateful to say I had an excellent experience with my anesthesiologist at Bon Secours Maryview Hospital. Dr. Thibodeau Khan had also prepped all the nursing staff regarding my diabetes, and my blood sugar levels were monitored excellently. She also ensured me that they would keep me overnight to keep an eye on my diabetes.

I am happy to report, that the surgery was a success! My blood sugar levels stayed the same throughout the entire procedure and afterwards during recovery. I was responding so well, I was actually able to go home that same day. I had very little pain, and didn’t even have to take any pain medication at home. Was this really happening? Was this whole process really that easy? Even for a Type 1 diabetic? All I can say to that is, “YES”, if your doctor is Rebecca Thibodeau Khan!!

I returned to work after only 10 days. I look back and think how relieved I am I didn’t wait another 5 years of monthly suffering!  My life is completely different now. My outlook is hopeful and worry free. I will continue to see Dr. Thibodeau Khan for all of my Women’s Health needs. I have so much respect and love for her. She gave me back a piece of my life!

Haley’s Advice:

Don’t wait 5 years like I did! If you have a health concern that isn’t being addressed, find a physician that will help you! They are out there, you just have to find them.
