Vernita’s Story: Saved by a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

It all started with my hair breaking off. Then it was the heavy cycles. No, not your “everyday” heavy cycle. So heavy in fact, that I became anemic. I had to undergo iron infusions and eventually had to resign from a job I loved. It was a 2 year long nightmare! I was labeled as everything from having a Thyroid disorder to being anemic.

Then I was sent to a local OB/GYN (unfortunately, not Monarch yet). This doctor tried MULTIPLE medicines and iron infusions to help with my heavy cycles and their debilitating symptoms. The medicines didn’t work. Nothing worked. Every month, I would bleed so heavily and be in so much pain that I was literally home-bound. I was scared, overwhelmed and completely stressed. Why wasn’t anything helping? I needed to get well for my three, small children, all with special needs, whom I recently adopted through foster care.

Then the OB/GYN told me that I had to have a DNC. This, he said, would “fix the problem.” At this point, I had to get well. I couldn’t keep living like this. I was nervous and unsure, but I trusted his opinion at the time. After the DNC, my cycles were WORSE! It was becoming unbearable. That doctor then suggested a traditional hysterectomy, meaning I would be “out of commission” for weeks and weeks. All that kept going through my head was, “how am I going to take care of my children through all of this?” I knew I needed the hysterectomy, but there had to be an easier way. Also, my oldest son, who was going to take care of me during recovery, was leaving in a few weeks with the Job Corps.

I knew my recovery COULD NOT take weeks. I didn’t have weeks. So, I started doing my research. I spent hours on the internet, researching my condition and different physicians in our local area and even beyond. That is how I found Monarch Women’s Wellness. I learned that both of their providers can perform minimally invasive hysterectomies with a much lessened recovery time. I remember thinking, this is my answer! I called and made an appointment with Dr. Thibodeau Khan immediately.

From the minute I met Dr. Thibodeau Khan, I was finally “at-ease” about my horrible health situation. She spent so much time with me, going over exactly how to cure my problem. She eased my fears and made me feel a comfort that I hadn’t felt during the past 2 years throughout this nightmare! She explained to me that she was going to perform a Laparoscopic Hysterectomy to remove my uterus and the fibroids that were causing my heavy bleeding and pain. She was completely professional and knowledgeable. I finally felt like I could trust a doctor with my health and that “getting well” was finally in my near future! I was going to be able to take care of my children again.

My surgery at Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center went great! No problems, no complications. Dr. Thibodeau Khan even “squeezed me in” to operate on me immediately after our first consult, because she knew my son was leaving in one week with the Job Corps. My recovery was quick to say the least! At my two week check-up, Dr. Thibodeau Khan said I was “doing perfectly”! Besides heavy lifting, I could resume my life as normal. “As normal,” I remember thinking. I couldn’t even remember what that felt like!

Vernita’s Advice:

My advice to anyone in my situation is to make an appointment with one of the physicians at Monarch Women’s Wellness FIRST! I wish I had known about Monarch, instead of wasting two years and a lot of pain and heartache that got me nowhere! I have sent many of my friends to Monarch. I believe in them. They took care of me when I thought my situation was hopeless. I will never see another OB/GYN. I am forever grateful to Dr. Thibodeau Khan. She gave me back my life to spend it with my precious children. Thank you!
